Factors Leading To Elbow Pain

Tennis Elbow

Medically termed as Lateral Epicondylitis, Tennis Elbow occurs due to repetitive twisting of the forearm, causing pain on the outside of the elbow. This pain may further increase while performing activities like lifting and throwing.  Tennis Elbow also causes inflammation, warmth and swelling in the affected area.

The condition may be treated with ice packs, resting and anti-inflammatory medications. Bracing the elbow can also help. Activities involving the affected elbow should be resumed only after consulting your elbow doctor. In severe cases, an orthopedic surgery may be performed.

Golfer's Elbow

Also know as Medial Epicondylitis, Golfer’s Elbow is a medical condition caused by inflammation in the tendons attaching forearm and the inner elbow. Activities that require twisting or straining of the affected area can worsen the condition and cause severe Elbow Pain.

The treatment involves application of ice packs, resting the elbow, and medications like NSAIDs. Using a strap can prevent worsening of the Elbow Pain. After a gradual rehabilitation program, the person may continue performing daily activities. However, ice applications may still be continued to avoid recurrent Elbow Pain.

Olecranon Bursitis

Olecranon Bursitis refers to a medical condition affecting the bursa at the tip of the elbow. The main causes of the condition are diseases such as Gout and Rheumatoid Arthritis that cause inflammation in the bursa. Olecranon Bursitis results in swelling on the elbow tip, accompanied with severe Elbow Pain.

Elbow fractures causes sharp pain in the elbow.  X-ray imaging is the best way to diagnose the fracture. Elbow fractures generally require immobilization and casts. In severe cases, orthopedic surgery may be recommended by the orthopedic doctor.

A stretch or tear in one or more elbow ligaments causes sprain. The main causes are collision, or a direct blow to the elbow. In order to reduce the pain, treatment options like rest, ice, immobilization, compression, and anti-inflammation medications are recommended by the doctor.
